"You can't make an omelette without breaking
eggs" is an old proverb which holds true under most
circumstances. When Heacham won its lengthy battle for
improvements to the the Lavender Junction on the A149
this was very much the case here as well. However, work
is now virtually complete and the lights are
operational in time for the Easter Bank Holiday weekend.
Heacham Parish Council said:
"The project is the result of a long running campaign
conducted by the Parish Council along with successive
Borough Councillors, County Councillors and MPs at the
request of the majority of Heacham residents and
visitors. The major works have been by their very nature
an inconvenience, but have served an important purpose
- to provide a safer and more accessible junction for
residents and visitors to Heacham as well as everyone
else who travels through the junction. The work has
proceeded very much to schedule and we are delighted
that the new look lavender junction will open on time."
In August 2005, the "Free the Heacham 5000" Campaign, led
by Heacham Parish Council, demonstrated strongly in
favour of improvements to the junction and similar
demonstrations took place to reinforce the need for
changes. These demonstrations followed years of
frustration concerning access issues plus numerous near
misses and actual accidents (sometimes fatal) and
resulted in this roadwork development project with costs
in the region of £1 million. Additional essential road
improvements are planned to improve road conditions on
the A149 access points into Heacham by way of Lamsey
Lane later in the year.
