As part of the American
Roots in English Soil Project (Aries), pupils in Year 6 at
Heacham Junior School have been involved in the production and
publishing of a book telling the true version of the Virginian
Princess Pocahontas, who was married to John Rolfe of Heacham.
The book was written to commemorate America's 400th birthday
with the anniversary of the founding of Jamestown, Virginia (the
first permanent English-speaking settlement in America).
The book, "Mrs John Rolfe of Heacham - Better Known as
Pocahontas", written by author and lecturer, John Haden
with considerable contributions from the pupils and staff at
Heacham Junior School, was officially launched on Thursday, 30
March 2006, at Norfolk Lavender with the personal
support of Managing Director, Henry Head. It is
the third of a series of books promoting the research
into links of our own region with early American history.

Credit for their
tremendous role in enabling the children to make such
positive contributions to the book went to Mr Brian
Griffin and Mrs Carolyn Ward (teachers at Heacham Junior
School) during speeches made by
Mrs Darley (Headteacher at Heacham Junior School), Mr Haden and Mr Nyce.
Following the accolades, pupils entertained an
extremely "full house" with a drama presentation relating
to the life of Pocahontas and a narrative entitled "And
Is It True?".
The highly successful event finished with the
traditional book signing by the key protagonists.
Heacham-On-Line says "well done Heacham Junior School".
