Heacham`s first Scarecrow Festival took place on Sunday 29th May, in the lovely gardens of Millbridge Nursing Home, Heacham.

The sun shone (most of the time!), the wind calmed, and the villagers turned out in force. Hundreds of adults and children came to enjoy the twenty one scarecrows on display. The Heacham Twirlers put on a marvellous performance, and Brian Brackenbury provided live music throughout the afternoon. There were stalls offering crafts, bric-a-brac, a tombola and more; and teas, cakes and ice creams were available.

Prizes were awarded as follows:

Best TV themed scarecrow:  Dr Who and the last Dalek, by Julian Geraghty

Best film themed scarecrow:  Harry Potter by Scott Garwood

Best under 16 entry:  Wizard of Oz by Heidi and Abigail Brown, and Ruby and Kitty Aylmer

Best humorous entry:  Surgeon by Brian Foster Pharmacy, Hunstanton

Best overall:  Vicar of Dibley by St Mary’s Church, Heacham

Although the final figures are not yet calculated, in the region of three hundred pounds were raised for the Heacham Minors Football Club and the Heacham Skateboard Association.

Thanks must go to the Heacham Parish Council for their support and gift of the prizes: to the directors of Millbridge Nursing Home, without whom the festival could not have happened; to the staff of the home for the extra work we caused them; and to the residents for their forbearance over the invasion we caused (although many of them said they enjoyed the festival too!).
